Our August Harvest Totals

The results are in! During the month of August, I weighed and made tallies of the amount of produce we were getting from our backyard garden. Let’s be honest though, half the time I made guesses or had to try and remember what I gathered from the week before (oh the life of having 2 little ones), but I think this is pretty close.

In the month of garden, we enjoyed and shared:
5lbs of green beans
1lb of zucchini (it would have been much, much higher but… we have a squirrel problem)
1lb of eggplant
24 pints of cherry tomatoes
6 cucumbers (they were on their last leg)
3 bunches of red chard
30lbs of asian pears
Endless amounts of basil, mint, green onions, thyme, parsley, and a small handful of strawberries.

I’ve been curious how much this would cost if we bought all this from the market and have been scoping out the prices I’ve seen at Whole Foods and the Farmer’s market. Based on what I’ve seen lately, the total cost of all this would have been about $160! Now, we probably wouldn’t have purchased 24 pints of cherry tomatoes, but it’s still pretty satisfying to see that number.

For me though, saving on our grocery bill is only one of the reasons that we garden. The main reason? I just love it, and it’s been so fun to see Gianna getting really comfortable in the garden. She actually knows where her veggies and fruit come from! We’re in the midst of starting seeds for our fall and winter garden. I can’t wait.

That’s awesome! I still want to start a garden too, and you have inspired me even more. 🙂
