Surprises in the Garden

The craziest thing happened the other day. Gianna and I were walking around our backyard when we stopped under our neighbor’s tree, that hangs over their fence into our yard, for some shade. As I was standing there, I found myself thinking about how much I wished we had more fruit trees in our yard. In our front yard alone we have four massive huge trees, none of which provide anything edible. Pat and I always bemoan the fact that none one of them is a huge Avocado tree. If only! Imagine all the guacamole, salads, sandwiches and other tasty things the creamy, green goodness would add to our life.

As I was standing there thinking I happened to look up and notice something I had never seen before. About 4 feet above my head was something that looked like fruit! As I started to search the other branches above me, I found about 4 more. I called Pat over and we discovered that we had a plum tree reaching over into our yard. Awesome! I’m guessing that we need to do some pruning this year to get more fruit out of the old branches. More on that later.

Some other surprises that day included spotting the first cucumber of the season. Can you spot it? I’m pretty sure from the look and taste that these aren’t the Japanese Soyu cucumbers I thought I had purchased, but they are still pretty tasty.

Between our garden boxes, out of nowhere I also found a foot-tall tomato plant making it’s way through the ivy. This little sprout had some determination. One fun thing about gardening is all the surprises that come from fruit and seeds that fall and nestle themselves into the soil. You never quite know what’s going to come back up. This time around, I either have a sun-gold, green zebra, or a beefy, yellow variety that I can’t remember the name of. Any guesses?
