Raising Bilingual Kids with Patrick Ku

I’m so excited to have my husband Pat on the podcast! In this week’s episode, it’s all about raising bilingual kids.

Whether or not you are thinking of raising dual language learners, what you will find in this episode is some open sharing of the process that Pat and I took as a couple to make this significant family decision. Investing in their Chinese language abilities has become one of the foundational elements for us in intentionally raising our kids with a strong ethnic identity.

We cover a lot of ground in the podcast, including sharing our own language backgrounds, the second-generation experience, why it was important for us that our kids learn Chinese,  and how we are practically making it happen.

If you haven’t already, please take a minute to rate and review the podcast! It really helps give it more visibility.

Lectio: Leaving a Good Thing

One of my favorite roles with our church has been as a lector, which means “one who reads” in Latin, and it involves getting to read one of the Sunday mass readings. I thought it would be fun to bring this to the podcast in a series called “Lectio,” or “reading.”

Every Sunday mass, there are three readings: Old Testament, epistles and the gospel. I’ll be syncing up episodes with the upcoming Sunday mass readings, so the week before mass you can be ruminating on one of the passages to come. While it’s the priest who reads the gospel at mass, I chose to do the gospel reading for this particular Lectio episode.

In addition to reading the passage, I’ll also be doing some Bible study and reflection. Bible study and teaching was a big part of my job in full-time campus ministry before having kids, and it was one of my favorite parts. I’m really looking forward to weaving these passions into this podcast space.

If you want to follow along with a Bible, the passage is Mark 1:29-39.

Nurturing Creative Energy with Writer Chante Griffin

“First, internal or spiritual transformation had to happen for me to become a creative and to own that identity.”

Chanté Griffin is  a writer, actress, and advocate and I know her personally as a good friend, spiritual mentor, and Joey’s godmother. Every time I talk to her, I am inspired, empowered and energized. Nurturing creative energy is the framework for this conversation. From there, we explore other topics including the broader definition of being a creative, the first step to learn how to listen to God’s voice and how to interact with transition and life interruptions. Also interwoven is Chanté’s journey from full-time Christian ministry work to full-time creative.

What Cleaning Up Taught me about Environmental Care

January 20, 2021 by Sarah

A few  years ago, I was captivated by a friend’s blog post chronicling her new zero-waste journey. I had never heard of the term zero-waste before, and it started my own exploration into Bea Johnson and her zero-waste home.  Starting over a decade ago, Bea’s family of 4 reduced their annual trash to a single jar.  I was fascinated.

Soon after that, I was like a zero-waste whirlwind over here. We have gone the full-range with finding ways to save water and energy and reduce waste. There were changes we made in those early days that we’ve continued to maintain, but I’ve also learned how to flex depending on the season of life. Right now, we have five young kids including a baby and I’ve had to really pare down our greener living habits to what is most sustainable in our current life season.

Getting rid of things well has been one of those things that for me is important to take the extra time and energy doing. On the newest episode of A Growing Home podcast, I share about our recent home changes that pushed us to a massive round of decluttering, two environmental wake-up calls, and the practical steps I take now to clean up with more attention to environmental care.

The latest episode is up: Art as Outlet and Connection.

You can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Google Podcasts

Dr. Teresa Ku-Borden’s voice is one that I am really honored to share on A Growing Home Podcast. She’s a doctor and mother serving in East Los Angeles. In this week’s episode, Teresa shares about how doing art has helped her process emotions and connect with her community during the pandemic.

We recorded this episode in the fall, after Teresa had multiple rounds in the hospital working with COVID patients. Right now, her hospital has been hit hard during the recent surge in Los Angeles. Please consider giving to https://www.reliefcorpsla.org/economic-relief.html#/ to help those who need support.

After you listen I’d love to hear, what is sticking with you from the conversation?
