Books, Diverse Authors, and Korean-American Culture with Theresa Yang and Rosa Lee

Theresa and Rosa inspire me, they have both been huge mentors to me in parenting and in faith. They are sisters and former teachers who have been working hard over the last few years to build Graphic Campus, a resource that connects authors and illustrators to students and educators. I loved chatting with them about their experience as co-founders and navigating a new and big project.

As often happens when I’m with Theresa and Rosa, we diverge and dig into diverse authors (there are SO many good recs that I’m bookmarking) and I also get to ask them about what part of their Korean-American culture they are looking forward to passing on to their kids.

Find the episode wherever you listen to podcasts and follow Graphic Campus, their podcast is my current favorite.

Well, this was a fun way to end my first season of A Growing Home Podcast. Yay! THANK YOU to everyone who listened!

In my latest episode, I shared that I’ll be taking a break to vision and plan for the next season ahead– and also give Pat more time to edit the upcoming episodes! I’ve already been recording a new batch over the last few months, a lot more good stuff ahead.

In the meantime, enjoy catching up on the whole first season or re-listening to your favorite episodes. If you think of others while listening, share the episodes with them! Doing that and rating/reviewing/subscribing to the podcast are the best ways to support.

The Good List with Teresa Ku-Borden

February 22, 2021 by Sarah

I’m really excited to have Teresa Ku-Borden back on the podcast today. If you haven’t already listened, Teresa was on an earlier episode called Art as Outlet and Connection. Teresa is a doctor and mother living in East Los Angeles and she serves the community there. She also happens to be my sister-in-law. Today, she is sharing with us what’s on her Good List: 4 things, big or small, that are bringing joy to small parts of her life. I got this idea from Tsh Oxenrider and her podcast formerly called the Good List. What I love about the Good List, as a mom of young kids, is that it reminds me that incorporating small things or moments that bring joy to my day, can make a really big difference. I’m always inspired by hearing others share what these things are for them, it helps spark ideas for me.

Lectio: Lent When Life is Already Hard

“Lectio: Lent When Life is Already Hard.”

This last Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. In the liturgical calendar, Lent is the time when we remember Jesus’ suffering and death as we prepare for the great celebration of Easter. Usually Lent is a time where we think about things to give up and how we can choose into suffering. Does that sound… hard?

I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to do Lent during a pandemic, when life is already hard. When browsing upcoming Sunday readings for a Lectio, I was drawn to the first reading’s story of Noah. When studying the passage, I was completely floored by the connection of God’s covenant with Noah to Jesus’ suffering and death, and what this all means for Lent.

In this episode, I dig into Noah’s story and look at the bigger story behind Lent. I also share some practical ideas of how to interact with Lent, if you’re in survival mode this year. Or, if you’re in a different place, also some ideas for using the lens of the pandemic to fast, pray, and give.

“What We’re Cooking” with Bonnie Hui-Callahan

February 15, 2021 by Sarah

This week’s episode is all about food! I’m chatting with Bonnie Hui-Callahan, working mom of 4. We cover all the bases: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and of course, snacks too.

Bonnie is Chinese-American and married to her Italian/Irish-American college sweetheart, lover of all things boba and red wine, and a pharmacist-by-training. She currently resides in South Orange County, CA and works at a local pharmacy school helping students get the hands-on, out-of-classroom training they need to graduate as practice-ready pharmacists.

She recently started “The Clinician-Leader”, a digital course and virtual coaching business focused on healthcare leadership, with her father-in-law, a physician-executive and retired Army Colonel with over 30 years of leadership experience.

While this has kept her busy, she has loved dedicating her creative energy towards a passion project focused on training up clinician-leaders in the midst of this pandemic (and beyond).
