On Turning 30

30th1Yesterday, I turned 30. It feels right, but I’m not sure it feels real yet. Back when I was a teenager, I remember thinking that 30 was SO. OLD. But then, my 20’s happened and all of a sudden Jennifer Aniston and so many other celebrities were getting into their 40’s and beyond, and all of a sudden, 30 didn’t feel so old any more. A funny way to measure things, I know.

I’ve been reflecting a lot these last few weeks about ending my 20’s. I realized that a whole lot happened in the last decade that I’m really, really grateful for. The 20’s for me were about growing up and discovering and becoming confident in who I am. And oh yeah, there were a ton of major life changes along the way.

In somewhat chronological order, 20 highlights from the last decade of life.

1. Started dating Pat, the week of graduation! What a crazy whirlwind that was.
2. Made a big move from Los Angeles to the Bay Area. I think I could live here forever, I love it here.
3. Said “yes!” when Pat proposed on a surprise trip to Oahu.
4. Mentored by amazing women. Jen, Chante, and Stephanie, I am so grateful for you.
5. Watched my first Food Network episode, got hooked. Now I can’t get enough of experimenting in the kitchen.
6. After 3+ years of reading, asking lots of people lots of questions, and praying, decided to join the Catholic church.
7. Planned a wedding and got married to the love of my life.
8. Bought a house.
9. Read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and it completely changed the way I view food.
10. Started a garden and a journey to create an edible landscape.
11. Had my first baby girl, my beautiful Gianna.
12. Got to see best friends get married and start families.
13. Started reading blogs, got really into them.
14. Started my own blog, after much convincing from Pat.
15. Read Check All That Apply and spent a lot of time exploring my identity as a biracial woman.
16. Directed a conference for multiracial college students.
17. Got to work for 7 years for an organization that I believe is changing the world.
18. Decided to end work and become a stay at home mom.
19. Had my first son, my little handsome Caleb.
20. And it must be added that 13 Going on 30 became my favorite movie and it remains that way.
So long, 20’s, you were good to me. 30’s, I’m ready for ya.

  1. You forgot to mention the experience you had floating down a river/stream in Washington on oversized inflatable sea animals with a bunch of your college friends. Hahaha! What a crazy life!

  2. Happy Birthday Sarah!

What do you think?
