May Garden Happenings

What’s going on in our garden these days? A whole lot.

For one thing, we started a crazy amount of things from seed for our summer garden. We have 16 cherry tomato plants that just got in the ground, parsley, basil, cucumbers, beans, and beneficial flowers (like marigolds, zinnias, and borage) among other things. Above is a photo of radish seedlings sprouting up. I personally don’t use radishes a lot, but I read that they’re known to repel bad insects. We’ll see if it’s true!

We’re also not yet done with the seed starting. I just planted carrot, kobacha squash, zucchini, melon, corn, chamomile and more basil and cilantro seeds.

I’m already not needing to buy a lot of veggies from the market. These days, we’re getting tons of chard, spinach, green onions, and thyme as well as reasonable amounts of lettuce, snap peas, and broccoli. It does seem like we’re eating the same vegetables over and over again, but there’s something cool about being limited to the season and specifically what our garden is producing.

Another thing that I’ve been enjoying in our garden is our new succulents from the garden exchange I went to a month ago. I learned recently that succulents need to be watered 2-3 times a week, way more than I had been doing! They’re awesome and I’ve grown to love them as part of landscape. I’ll admit, I thought they were weird looking at first.

I have about 6 more weeks to get the summer garden really going until life gets a little crazy with baby #2 coming. I hope by then we’ll have a ton of good stuff coming out of the garden.

    How’s the rhubarb doing?

I think it died!! I’m still holding out some hope… but I really think I killed the rhubarb AND asparagus. I need to write a post about all my gardening fails!

What do you think?
