Friday Quick Takes

one. I’m super excited about this cookbook that’s coming out. The author/blogger is Chinese and her husband is Korean/white. I’m anticipating all sorts of Asian fusion goodness.

two. With Lucia now napping for good stretches in her bed, we’re now a little more stuck to the house and I’m needing to think of more activities for the kids to do. A few of my simple, back-pocket activities that we’ve been doing: flour + water for an easy dough to play with. Chalk + water + paint brushes for fun outdoor art. Vinegar + food coloring + baking soda for fizzy, science fun.

three. I chose this book for my book club’s next read. I found it from this list, 35 Novels by Women of Color. If you missed it, I did a longer post last week about adding in voices of color.

four. I can’t believe I’m writing this. We are getting chickens! Somehow, Natalie caught me at a time where I just happened to be open to the idea of it. Her friend was giving away a coop, supplies, and two hens. We are passing on the hens for now until we get all set up and feel more ready, but we are actively moving towards fresh eggs, and chicken clucking, and more poop in our yard. Are we crazy? Maybe. Luckily, Caleb already offered to be the chicken poop cleaner!

five. Our CSA box came with some pretty gorgeous purple daikon the other week. I pickled them using a recipe in this Korean cookbook. Just vinegar, sugar, salt and water. Really easy and added such a great crunch and bite to our recent meals. My older kids devour them!

six. I bookmarked this post about how many vegetable plants to plant in your garden to feed your whole family. I feel like I’ve never had a good handle on that, I either plant too little of things (like snap peas) or too much of others (like super spicy arugula).

seven. I really loved this podcast series on social self care. The second episode in particular really spoke my language and is also a big reason why I’m feeling like chickens are a good thing for me and my family!

Linking up with This Ain’t the Lyceum.
