I’ve been so looking forward to sharing this conversation that I recorded with Shuli de la Fuente-Lau earlier this year. Shuli is the creator of the Instagram @AsianLitforKids, and the Content Lead at LittleFeminist.com – a monthly book club subscription and publishing house. By day, she is an assistant principal at an elementary school.  

In this episode, Shuli  shares her story behind starting the Instagram account and why representation in books is so important. She also talks about her own story as a third culture kid, growing to hold her Chinese Malaysian American identity with gratitude.

A few years ago, I started having a word for the summer. The first time I chose the word “play.” After many months in school, I wanted my kids to be outside digging around in sand and running around playgrounds.
I’m launching a new Instagram account! @asiancatholicwoman is where I’ll be exploring the Catholic faith through my Asian-American lens.
“I think one thing that’s strengthened in me is an admiration for immigrants... Now, having moved over here, I just feel how hard it is. There are times when I’m with my Thai co-workers in a staff meeting; and there’s who I am, and then there’s this language barrier. All of who I am, the humor, the nuance, it can’t come out. And, that’s hard.”
