Creating an Edible Landscape

We’re currently in phase one of a pretty major project to build a landscape that we hope will provide us all the produce we need to feed our family. I’ve had this dream for a while, but it was only a recent garden consultation that made me believe that this was actually possible. If you happen to live in the bay area, our garden consultant Steve is amazing. He’s all about organic gardening and creating an edible landscape. You gotta get some time with him!

After our consultation, we had a major to-do list. Here are all the things that we’re doing in the month of February. Who knew it would be such a crazy month of gardening!

  • Move garden boxes from along the fence to the lawn. Done! Photo above. We’re planning to add at least 2 more boxes in the next year or so.
  • Purchase Black Satin thornless blackberries (3), thornless raspberries (4), and plant Kyoho grape vines (3) to grow along the fence.
  • Cut down Eucalyptus tree and prepare to plant an avocado tree.
  • Purchase and plant 30+ strawberry plants, a mixture of June-bearing and ever-bearing. We already have 6 Sequoia’s in!
  • Prepare an asparagus bed and plant crowns. Done! 10 Atlas plants.
  • Plant artichokes, 3 purple golden globes.
  • Prune asian pear tree. Done!
  • Enrich the soil and fertilize our 3 existing blueberry bushes and citrus (lemon, navel orange, lime, and mandarin orange). Plant 3 more blueberry bushes.
  • Plant more broccoli and snap peas to finish out our winter garden.
  • Plant rhubarb. (Anyone else eat rhubarb? I grew up with it in my Washington backyard and have so many memories of strawberry-rhubarb pie. YUM!)
  • Start seeds indoors with our new hydro-farm germination station. I’ll be starting tomatoes (Sweet 100 and Sungolds), cucumbers, pimiento de padron (a Spanish pepper), and herbs.

I’m getting tired just writing this list! Luckily, the hubs is doing all the hard labor. Me and my burgeoning baby belly aren’t suited for most of what needs to get done.
