The Neiman Marcus Cookie

Lately, I find myself calling my mom a lot more often to ask for a particular recipe that is stored away in her wooden recipe box. I have no idea where this cookie recipe came from, but I remember it being handwritten on a white index card. Most likely a friend gave it to her, telling her that it was the best chocolate chip cookie recipe, ever! And yes, that’s exactly what it is.

The story behind it is pretty funny. A mom and daughter go to eat at the Neiman Marcus cafe. They can’t believe how amazingly delicious their cookie was, ask for the recipe, and were shocked to find they were charged $250 bucks for it. They heard, and were expecting, $2.50. As some sort of revenge, the woman released the recipe into the wide open world. Now, apparently, it isn’t true, but it still makes for a great cookie story. And really, I think this is the best chocolate chip cookie recipe out there.

The secret lies in the blended oats that make up most of the dry ingredients and add a nutty and hearty element to the cookie. You don’t even know it’s there, except you do because there’s just something about these cookies that are so dang good. Might we call these cookies a health bar instead? Ok maybe not, there is plenty of butter and chocolate. The good stuff.

The Neiman Marcus Cookie, adapted from the recipe you’ll find all over the internet and in my mom’s recipe box

1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 large eggs, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups oats, blended
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 ounces chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

In the bowl of a standing mixer fixed with a paddle attachment, cream the butter and both sugars together. Add the eggs and vanilla, and stir.

In a separate bowl, sift together the blended oats, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add in thirds to the wet ingredients and mix in until just incorporated. With a wooden spoon, stir in the chocolate chips and then the walnuts.

Roll into 2-inch balls and place on an un-greased cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes or until the cookies are just turning a golden brown.
