Friday Quick Takes

one. I mentioned Voices Rising in my last post. I’m continuing to be struck by the women of color who are sharing their experiences of serving loving urban poor communities around the world. As I read, I keep thinking that what they’re sharing just probably would have never been noticed by a guy or someone not of a minority culture. We need more books like this and to hear these voices! Yes, something I’m super passionate about. The book comes out next week and you can pre-order it here. I’m super excited to go to the launch party up in our area in a few weeks!

two. After weeks of telling myself I was going to sign up for this new cooking club and forgetting to, I finally did! Anyone else doing it? There’s a magic shell recipe for this week that looks really easy and really yummy. three. Gianna’s 7th birthday was this week! Starting when Gianna and Caleb have turned 4, I started asking them what they wanted to do for their birthday. Caleb has always opted for big parties, but Gianna tends to like things smaller. This year, she went back and forth with what she wanted to do but landed on wanting to visit a community garden to pick vegetables. I reached out to the owners of the small farm where we get our vegetables through a CSA program and that became our destination. Santa Cruz was on the way there, so we stopped for lunch and then spent the afternoon meandering through rows of veggies, hanging out with goats, and chatting with the owner about what small farm life is like. We learned a lot and the kids had such a blast. We ended with a spaghetti dinner at home and this cake, which Gianna and I had watched on our favorite cooking show and she knew right away she wanted for her birthday.

four. My current hold requests at the library: this cookbook, this one for bookclub, and this. For the latter, I’m 157th in line. Yikes.

five. Just listened to this podcast episode. If you’re feeling like you need to do some house purging, like I forever am, this is a short, practical, and really great listen. Can I go so far as to say that it’s better than reading the super popular The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up? Way shorter and you’re not asked to talk to your clothes.

six. Homemade tortillas!. They really are simple, made them with the kids using parchment paper and a heavy cast iron. Caleb is our official tortilla flipper in our house, he loves it.

seven. We had sick kids over here for a number of weeks and are hopefully at the tail end of it. All the coughing and colds made me look into natural remedies more, I’m not fully sure how I feel about all the different options yet, but this post is where I’ve started in learning more.
