A Nursery for a Small Space

I can’t believe that in less than 4 months this nursery will look very different. Well, maybe not so different. We still haven’t figured out how to arrange rooms for baby #2 on the way. But for the time we’ve had it this way, this nursery has served us very well.

My husband and I are becoming pros at working with small spaces. Our home itself is less than 1000 square feet and this room is the smallest of three, measuring in at 8′ by 10′. The bedrooms are all in a row, this being the middle one, so it was destined to be the baby room.

The location of the door and closet set some natural limits for us. We knew we wanted to peek though a slightly ajar door to check on a sleeping baby, so that also meant the crib could be in one of 2 places. My husband wisely decided to position it this way so that the shelving unit, with the changing table, was next to the closet where the diaper pail would be. Having the unit in front of a wall (versus the window) also meant that we could install a shelf and hooks, which has been so nice for a little decorative element and a place to hang a towel and pajamas. The shelves itself act as storage for books, toys, cloth diapers, and other things that we need to grab easily.

Another thing I love in this room are the bins in the closet. The shelving was already there and these Ikea bins were the cheapest option for storage that I could find. Gianna’s clothes are so tiny and it’s so easy to toss them into them. Can I also express my deep fondness for this diaper pail once again? It’s awesome and totally keeps the odors out.

Our nursery also happens to be great for if you’re on a budget. Just about everything in the room was either a gift, a hand-me-down, bought with a gift card, or from Ikea or Target. That’s how we do it around here. It’s amazing how little you can spend and still have a great looking space. If you’re interested, below are the brands and places where we got some of the bigger items in our nursery.

My baby girl cannot resist getting into photos! (Can you spot her hand in another photo in this post?) She absolutely loves her room. Lately she’s been really into her ABC frames and the bug mobile above her bed. And always a favorite activity of hers, pulling off all her books off the book ledges. Sometimes I wonder if these ledges were a good idea, but I like them overall.

You guys did a great job! It doesn’t look cluttered at all. Storing the books flat against the wall was a great space saving idea and naturally gives color. Love it!
