20 Thoughts on 20 Weeks

All of a sudden, I’m halfway through this pregnancy! The first 20 weeks have already been a little bit of a blur, and I thought it would be helpful to stop and write down a few things before they all get lost from my memory. So, mostly for me to remember, but also just to share, 20 random things about being pregnant with our third little baby.

  • The surge of emotions that erupt when taking a pregnancy test never changes, ever.
  • Soon after finding out we were pregnant, I told Pat that I wanted to wait to find out our baby’s gender until birth. I thought it would be a fun surprise.
  • I love being able to talk to Gianna about the pregnancy! When I first told her there was a baby in my belly, she let me know that she also had a baby in hers. Later she told me there were two, then it grew to five, and now she just has a baby boy in there.
  • The nausea and fatigue of the first trimester felt a lot harder this time around, mainly because I struggled with feeding myself while also responding to the needs of my two, very active kids.
  • I don’t even know what I ate the whole first trimester, but I know that at some point I craved nachos, really bad.
  • You know that your first trimester is hard when you console yourself with the fact that at least you aren’t experiencing labor.
  • There are so many anxieties that surface during pregnancy! Worries about the baby surviving the first trimester and being healthy… I wrestled with these anxieties once again.
  • After the nachos, I think my next strong craving was fresh fruit. Luckily, the summer fruits started rolling in! I can devour fresh strawberries like none other these days.
  • I first felt baby move around 15-16 weeks! It’s the coolest and weirdest feeling ever.
  • I’m pretty sure I recently felt the baby do a full somersault in there.
  • Pat and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary during this stretch. I find it amazing that in what feels like a short period of time, God gave us the gifts of 3 little babies.
  • I still can’t stop tearing up when I see videos of new babies or births, it’s worse when I’m pregnant. All the hormones!
  • As my belly starting getting bigger, I remembered my loathing of maternity jeans. But I recently discovered ones with side panels, it’s a total game changer.
  • My hair stopped falling out recently, one of my favorite pregnancy symptoms.
  • I’ve been able to jog (at what is probably your walking speed) even now, it’s been nice to get some exercise. I’m thinking of swimming once jogging becomes uncomfortable.
  • Every time we’ve asked Gianna if she’s hoping for a sister or brother, she says sister. She started asking where her baby sister is going to sleep when she comes.
  • Ultrasounds only happen a few times during pregnancy and they are the best. I savor the times when I get to peek at my little baby.
  • I changed my mind about waiting to find out about the gender. Our family has been in some major transition and I couldn’t handle any more unknowns.
  • We found out that we are having a little girl! Bring on the pink, frilly things.
  • During the ultrasound, she was sucking her thumb. My heart melted.
